Why Workplace Messaging May Be Making a Comeback

‘Online chat’ is arguably almost as old as the internet itself - however, this year seems to suggest that workplace messaging may be making a comeback. With Slack announcing a $250 million investment from a Japanese company Softbank in September, their total funding now stands at $790 million. This has created a huge boost in Slack’s valuation from $3.8 billion to a staggering $5.1billion. Rumours even surfaced in June that Amazon were looking to purchase the company for as much as $9 billion. In the meantime, Microsoft launched their new chat app called ‘Teams’ that is set to eventually replace Skype for Business. In addition, Atlassian, the company responsible for the esteemed workplace messaging app ‘HipChat’, launched their new service known as ‘Stride’. Similarly, Bhavin Turakhia, an Indian billionaire, invested $45 million of his own funds into Flock, a major Slack competitor which he founded. If that doesn’t seem like enough evidence...

£7.6 Million – Back in Your Pockets

One of the things we do each month at Call Collective is calculate how much money we save callers with our free conference calling service known as WHYPAY?. Each month we work out how many minutes our WHYPAY? users spend on conference calls, and combine this figure with the per minute costs from a number our competitors who charge a par minute rate. This gives us a good indication of the amount of money our callers are saving by using WHYPAY? (assuming they use their bundled minutes for their conference calls). Many so-called 'free' conference providers require that participants dial and 084 number or a mobile shortcode, which can lead to high call charges. WHYPAY? on the other hand uses an 03 number, which means calls are INCLUDED in bundled minutes. ...

Bundled Minutes – What Exactly Are They?

Telephone networks, TV adverts and other sources often talk about 'bundled minutes', 'contracted minutes' or 'inclusive minutes' when referring to telephone calls. In the world of telecoms, there's a pretty high level of confusion among consumers about minutes allowances and call charges in general. Over the years, Ofcom has introduced regulations to give more clarity to members of the public about what they'll pay when they make a particular phone call. However, many are still left confused about whether a call is included in their 'bundled minutes' and what exactly their bundled minutes can be used for....

Self-healing glass to end cracked phone screens?

Japanese researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed a new type of self-healing glass which holds the power to repair its own cracks and breaks. A novel glass made from a low-weight polymer known as “polyether-thioureas” is able to heal breaks when pressed together by hand. This entirely eliminates the need for high heat to first melt the material prior to repair....

Don’t Get Stuck in Traffic. Hold Your Next Meeting Online.

The UK is plagued with commuters. According to the BBC, we spend about an hour each day getting to and from work. We've even witnessed a rise in 'extreme commuting', where the total travel time exceeds three hours a day. In fact, there are real-life horror stories about 6 hour round trips from Wales to Watford, or from Lancashire to central London. And some workers are doing this every weekday....

Remote Working – The Hard Stats

We still see city commuters struggling frantically through busy journeys and transport strikes, finding any way they can to reach their desks. So of course, there must be reasons why some employees choose not to work remotely - or indeed why some businesses aren't allowing it - even if it's theoretically possible. So how many of us a really able to, and are choosing to work remotely? Well the claims about remote working's ubiquity are certainly there as we've seen, but finding hard stats to describe the global remote worker population is a lot more difficult...
